Gone With The Wind
I must tell you that I’m not a movie buff. In fact I rarely watch movies on TV and it’s even more rare for me to go to the theater. So this weekend, I surprised myself by watching three movies!
Last night I went to the newly renovated Athens Theater to see Gone With The Wind. By the way, today is the seventieth anniversary of the first showing.
As I watched the movie, I paid close attention to Scarlett and how she got what she wanted. There was no question that her love for her homeland had no boundaries. She would do anything to keep the land and make it profitable no matter what.
Scarlett showed a ruthlessness and compassion. She showed compassion to her pregnant friend (Melanie) even though she was in love with Melanie’s husband. Scarlett was of the opinion that she was beautiful and irresistible. Her mind would not allow her to accept that a man she loved could love someone else. Now, I must give Scarlett credit here, she never told Melanie about her feelings! This brings to mind that Scarlett was very proficient in practicing deception.
Scarlett’s ruthlessness and deception were evident when she married her sister’s fiance under false pretenses. She needed the money to pay the taxes on her land and this was the most expeditious way she knew to get it.
I would venture to say that there is a bit of ruthlessness and compassion in each of us. Think about a time when you set your goals and made up your mind that you would achieve it “no matter what.” Now think about how good you felt, and the joy that you exuded when you achieved your goal. It didn’t occur to you that you were behaving ruthlessly, all you knew was that you were working to achieve your goals.
Now, think of a time when you showed compassion. This was a time when you gave freely of your time and energy to support someone else. You were there for your friend even when you could have been doing something else. So now you were ruthlessly compassionate!
Being ruthless and having compassion are desired qualities to help achieve the goals you set for your life. It’s up to you which one you choose to use the most often.
Which will you choose?
Clear and Present Danger

As boomer women we have so many tasks, projects and events that we sometimes forget to take time for ourselves. On Saturday, I took some time to watch a movie on TV. The name of the movie is Clear and Present Danger. This movie shows what happens when people you trust practice deception. The deception is so covert that you have no idea about what’s really going on.
Naturally, I started thinking about how we as individuals practice self deception. Self deception, sometimes called self sabotage is more devastating than deception from others. Watching the movie, I noticed the amount of time spent by the deceivers on putting their projects first, securing the necessary manpower and equipment to make the project go smoothly.
Many times we set goals, develop a plan of action and begin implementation. Of course, we put our projects first; secure the necessary equipment and materials to make the project go smoothly. Some where along the way of implementation we start to question the ease with which the project is moving. Once we start this path, we almost immediately start to find something wrong or other ways to slow the process. Could this be self deception the beginning of self sabotage?
Old thought patterns begin to trigger old unsuccessful behaviors which lead to asking questions that surely derail the successful process already started. We start to ask “what if…” Once the “what if…” questions arise, it’s not long until the whole project seems fruitless. Could this be fear that we might succeed?
And then, just like in the movie, along comes an honest person who reveals the deception for what it is. This is the person we trust, our support person, the person who now sees our self deception and reveals it to us. This person encourages us and empowers us to go on. This support person helps us reevaluate our plan, helps us renegotiate and restart our implementation. This is the person who ALWAYS believes in us even when we don’t believe in ourselves.
So, boomer women, taking time for ourselves doesn’t necessarily mean engaging in mindless activity. Even though watching a movie can be considered mindless by some however by others there’s great value to be found.
Can you think of a time when self deception and/or self sabotage derailed you? What did you do about it?
Can you think of a time when you were the support person revealing the self deception and/or self sabotage? How did that work for the other person?

The Coldest Day Ever!
Unplugged But Not Disconnected
Just the other day I was using my Bluetooth and it kept beeping that the battery was low. I thought “this is odd” because I charge it every night. So I plugged in the tip for a couple of hours then started back to using it. Almost immediately I started hearing the beeping again, so I plugged it in again. This time for four hours, next try, and same thing happened. So I decided to leave it plugged in overnight. The next morning, the minute I started using it, it started beeping. Now I’m about to become really upset because I’ve had this one less than a year.
After much talking to myself, I decided to go out later in the day to purchase a new one. As I sat down to lunch, my eyes wandered over to the outlet where the Bluetooth is plugged into. Imagine my chagrin when I noticed that the piece that goes into the wall was on the floor! All I could do was laugh heartily.
Has this ever happened to you? The major piece you need is right in front of you but somehow it’s overlooked. The more you work with the most visible piece, the more frustrated you become.
